ESP LTD James Hetfield Truckster Signature Electric Guitar

James Hetfield, one of the founding members of rock icons Metallica, has created his fifth signature guitar model. The Truckster is a new ESP Signature Series guitar that is precisely based on Hetfield's personal custom ESP.

The Truckster offers every minute detail of James ESP, down to the 'aging' of the finish. ESP has done custom guitars for Metallica for over 15 years, and Metallica's guitars have been some of their most popular signature models. ESP is proud to offer the high level of quality James demanded for a guitar with his name attached.

ESP's Truckster is a single-cutaway, solid body electric featuring a distinctive aged gray primer finish over its mahogany body and neck. The unique finish wear is precisely duplicated to match James Hetfield's personal instrument. The Truckster offers a set-neck construction, a 24.75 in. scale, and a rosewood fingerboard that features flag inlays with "LTD" at the 12th fret, and a unique cast aluminum raised logo tops each headstock.

The Truckster puts an EMG-81 pickup in the bridge and an EMG-60 at the neck. These are controlled via two volume controls and one tone control, as well as a 3-way toggle (another 3-way toggle in the upper position is inactive, but ESP included it for perfect authenticity with Hetfield's actual instrument).

The guitar's distinctive finish is complemented by satin chrome hardware, including its Sperzel locking tuners, and TonePros locking bridge w/stop tailpiece. White binding on the Truckster's body, neck and headstock and 22 extra-jumbo frets completes the detailed signature model.

The JH Set is a totally new dimension for EMG with the design being driven solely with the input of James Hetfield. In early 2009 James Hetfield contacted EMG Pickups president Rob Turner and presented him with a challenge: to create a “stealth” looking set that captures the clarity and punch of a passive pickup and still retains the legendary active tone that molded a generation.
Featuring sleek black nickel plated caps and EMG’s Solderless Installation System™ components, the JH Set consists of the JH-N (neck) and the JH-B (bridge). Both pickups were patterned after the pickups James has used for 30 years but the end result was a completely different animal. The JH-N has individual ceramic poles and bobbins that feature a larger core and are taller than the 60. This produces more attack, higher output, and fuller low end in the neck position. The JH-B uses the same type of core but has steel pole pieces, unlike the 81 that uses bar magnets. This produces the familiar tight attack with less inductance for a cleaner low end.

The SPD-SX is equipped with nine highly sensitive rubber pads with two independent real-time control knobs and four dedicated effect buttons. Roland’s most advanced triggering technology ensures the ultimate in accuracy and fully dynamic performance, while a large backlit LCD provides easy-to-read data in all varieties of environments. Each pad has a companion LED that illuminates to show the pad’s status. When you trigger sample phrases, the LEDs remain lit to show you which pads are in play and which are not. In addition, the LEDs change illumination strength according to audio-level activity (similar to level meters on a mixing board). The high-contrast red divider lines help you see the pad zones clearly onstage.

Triple Stereo Loops

Create, stack, and manipulate multi-layered loops with the RC-300's three stereo tracks — each track being independently controllable. The “Auto Recording” feature starts recording the moment you begin playing your instrument, or as soon as you start a connected audio player. Count-In mode gives you one-bar of rhythm before recording starts. You can Undo/Redo as you go. The sky's the limit with three hours of recording time!

Expanded Pedalboard

The RC-300's ultra-wide pedalboard is equipped with an Expression pedal (which can be assigned to a variety of parameters) and enlarged footswitches for controlling REC/PLAY and STOP for each track. There's also a master ALL START/STOP footswitch onboard. Additionally, three independent faders provide immediate control of each track's output volume. And if that’s not enough control under your hands and feet, you can also connect external Expression pedals and footswitches (sold separately).

Onboard FX

Process your tracks and external-input signals with the RC-300's expressive onboard effects, including Transpose, Flanger, Phaser, Modulator, vocal effects, and more. A dedicated LOOP FX footswitch is provided for instant activation of the onboard effects. Control the effects parameters in real time with the Expression pedal for hands-free creativity onstage. You can apply the effects to any single track as well as to the entire mix, expanding your creativity and musical expression.

Rhythm Guide and Preloaded Audio

To keep your loops tight and in time, you can play along with one of the cool rhythm patterns in the RC-300's onboard library as you record; the Loop Quantize feature helps you having your recordings looped in time. Dozens of rhythm types are onboard, including rock, pop, shuffle, Latin, and more. A dedicated knob lets you adjust the volume of the rhythm, and you can set the tempo incrementally or via tap tempo. You can also specify the time signature. When you save a phrase, the rhythm type and time signature will also be saved. To get you up and running right away, the RC-300 comes preloaded with audio backing tracks (including bass tracks, piano tracks, etc.) for instant play-along performance and fun.

USB Connectivity

Connect the RC-300 to your computer via a standard USB cable, and back up your phrases externally for safekeeping. You can import and export WAV files between your computer and the RC-300; 16-bit/44.1kHz WAV files of up to 1.7GB in size can be imported.

AUX Input

In addition to recording your instrument performances and turning them into playable loops, you can record other external stereo audio sources via the AUX IN. Sounds from a digital-audio player or other device connected to the AUX input can easily be recorded and added to your loop performance.

Where it all began...

In 1987 Guns and Roses released their debut album – Appetite For Destruction – and changed rock music forever. Raw, unrelenting and "in-yer-face" from start to finish, this was the record that redefined rock music in the 80s. The lyrics were incisive and the music uncompromising, completed by Slash's inspired fretboard mastery and unique sound, regarded by many as the ultimate rock tone.
The intriguing history of the Marshall amp used by Slash on AFD and its subsequent disappearance has now passed into rock folklore. Widely believed to be a hot-rodded, 100 Watt, pre-master volume model from the early 70s, this legendary amp was hired specifically for the "Appetite" sessions in 1986. Eager to hold on to the amplifier, Slash told rental company S.I.R. that it had been stolen, only to have it "stolen" back a year later during tour rehearsals. Epiphone's history and association with Les Paul dates way back to the days when Les, working at the Epiphone factory on 14th St. in New York, created the world's first electric guitar. Over the years, Les continued to work closely with Epiphone by reviewing new product ideas and offering suggestions. The NEW Epiphone "Tribute" Les Paul Standards honor that relationship by combining "as good as it gets" performance and features with legendary Epiphone quality and value.

At the heart of the "Tribute" Les Paul is construction. Tribute LP's feature a solid Mahogany back with a solid, carved hard Maple cap to create the ultimate combination of warmth and bite. Everyone knows that set-neck guitars provide the best rock tone and sustain and the "Tributes" take that to the next level featuring the original "deep set" neck joint. The solid Mahogany neck with hand-fitted, glued-in joint extends well into the neck pickup cavity creating maximum neck-to-body contact and acting almost like one continuous piece of wood. Combined with the Mahogany/Maple body, the result is a tribute to Les' timeless guitar design with the sound that you can only get from a Les Paul.

Your choice of neck profiles. Depending upon your taste, you have the choice of either a traditional "1960's" SlimTaper(tm) neck profile or an Asymmetrical neck profile. The "1960's" SlimTaper is a comfortable "D" shaped neck that was used and made famous on many 1960's era, Kalamazoo-made guitars from Gibson and Epiphone. The newer Asymmetrical neck has multiple radii and combines a more rounded "D" shape on the bass side of the neck with a flatter "C" shape on the treble side. This leads to a very comfortable neck that more ergonomically contours to fit the hand of most players. Both profiles are available on the Tributes and the choice is yours!

But quality construction, premium woods and choice are only part of the equation. Capturing all the power and nuances of the "Tribute" is a pair of authentic Gibson USA '57 Classic humbucking pickups. With its "Patent Applied For" decal on the base plate, the '57 Classic and '57 Classic Plus are faithful replicas of the famous Gibson humbuckers that helped define the music of the late 1950s. The '57 Classic gives you a tone that is warm and subtle with full, even response that doesn't hold back when you need that classic Gibson humbucker crunch! The '57 Classic Plus is the perfect bridge pickup and mimics humbuckers of that era that received a few extra turns of wire. This treatment gives the pickup slightly higher output without sacrificing its rich, vintage tone. In combination, this pair of humbuckers overdrives tube preamps to a smooth level of saturation without becoming overpowering. Both '57's feature Gibson's special Alnico II magnet, vintage enamel coated wire, nickel plated pole pieces, nickel slugs, maple spacers and vintage-style, braided wiring.

But this guitar is not just about recreating the "old", it's also about looking ahead... just as Les himself continued to do throughout his lifetime. Using 4-conductor pickup wiring, Epiphone has added two push/pull tone pots to allow for series/parallel pickup switching. Gretsch Catalina Maple Drumset Article by Ben Meyer

Gretsch’s Catalina line has been around for a few years now, so what makes this maple kit different from the original? Professional-quality heads, 30-degree roundover bearing edges, better hardware, and some new badge artwork arejust a few of the many upgraded features.

GOOD FIRST IMPRESSIONS

I was pleased with the fit and finish of the new Catalina Maples from the moment I started unpacking them. All of the bearing edges that I examined were smooth and free of the rough spots that I sometimes find on mid-price drums. The chrome hardware looked great, and the highgloss transparent ebony finish, which lets some of the maple grain show through, was flawless. (Cherry gloss and amber finishes are also available.) The white coated Gretsch-logo resonant bass drum head really helped set off the finish on these drums.

I also noticed that the functional but generic hardware of the original Catalinas had been replaced by chunky, professionallooking Gretschbranded tom mounts and floor tom leg brackets. These additions help make the kit feel more high-end and less like a foreign-manufactured likeness of the original. I definitely would expect to pay more for these drums than their actual street price if I saw them in a store window.

SOUND EVIDENCE

As impressed as I was with the appearance of the updated Catalina Maple kit, I was really excited after I got some sounds. The snare and rack toms ship complete, so I was able to give them a good whack right out of the box. I was pleased to hear a warm, open tone from the 8x10 tom on the very first hit. The other drums tuned up easily (7x8, 9x12, and 16x16 toms are also included), and I was pleased with the evenness of the sound from one drum to the next. The toms matched each other well, and none of them stuck out as being livelier than another, as is often the case with less expensive drums. The inclusion of Gretsch’s high-end, noninvasive GTS tom mounts definitely plays a part in this. The toms came fitted with coated single-ply batter heads and clear singleply resonants, all from the newly developed “Gretsch by Evans” line. These heads seemed very similar, if not identical, to Evans coated and clear G1s, and they gave the drums great sustain and warmth. It’s refreshing to find a major drum company selling mid-price drums with professionalquality heads.

As I expected from its beefy 18x22 dimensions, the Catalina bass drum sounded huge. Though the included premuffled Gretsch by Evans clear batter head gave it nice punch and fullness, I could tell that the drum would kick you in the gut at twenty paces when outfitted with one of the popular pre-muffled heads commonly seen today, plus a bit of additional dampening. So I replaced the stock batter head with an Aquarian Super- Kick II and added a little muffling for the resonant head, which produced the huge punch I had expected.

The 6x14, eight-lug snare sounded great out of the box. It was tuned fairly high, giving it nice sensitivity and a musical ring. After a bit of tweaking, I found

that the drum fattened up nicely when I tuned it down and applied some muffling. The coated single-ply Gretsch by Evans batter yielded a widely usable sound.

PROOF IN THE PUDDING

I was looking forward to putting these drums to work, and I was able to use them on several gigs where I played a range of styles, including country, rock, and more jam-oriented material. The toms’ strong Gretsch character revealed itself while I was playing a rock standard by an artist whose drummer is a well-known Gretsch endorser. It’s no small feat for a mid-price set to achieve a recognizable—and good—signature sound with stock heads and very little tweaking, but these drums did just that. This is surely due to the inclusion of classic Gretsch features like five-lug rack toms and 30-degree roundover bearing edges. The less sharp edges gave the drums a very warm sound and a bit less stick attack. The thicker 7-ply, 7.2 mm maple shells worked well with these bearing

edges, which are similar to those found on Gretsch drums from the 1950s and ’60s. All that said, these Catalinas had a modern sound that would easily be at home in any style of music.

CONCLUSION

The new Catalina Maple drums delivered strong, resonant sounds in every room I played them in, and they responded well to being muffled to suit the acoustics of each space. I’m always interested in getting non-drummer perspectives on my sound, and the engineer on the first job where I used the Catalina Maples commented that they were some of the bestsounding drums he’d heard in a while. The bandleader on another gig said he liked the look of the kit and thought the white bass drum head was a nice choice. It’s always good to keep the boss happy! With a street price of around $900, the new Catalina Maple drumset is a great

value, especially considering its solid build and great sound.

CHALLENGES

Do I have to have the USB‐to‐30‐pin adaptor? Yes. Currently this is the only approved adaptor from Apple that will allow connection of USB devices to an iPad. They are readily available from most authorized Apple iPad dealers.

Full Contact Hardware Bass Bridge Installation

Full Contact Hardware is an innovative electric guitar and bass saddle solution featuring the patent pending "eCAM" saddle system, designed by Jeff Babicz.

The eCAM saddle offers full contact between the vibrating string and the body of the instrument. Babicz designed FCH with the intent of gaining the maximum amount of direct string coupling to the body of the instrument, with over 50 times more contact surface per saddle compared to conventional saddle designs. Direct coupling means improved tone and sustain.

In an effort to support the growing number of Full Contact Hardware consumers, Jeff Babicz has begun creating a series of videos offering his personal insight on the features and installation of these innovative guitar and bass bridges.
